HISTORY OF THE COMMUNITY

1984

  • The Villa Renata facility for drug addicts was founded by unanimous decision of the Venice City Council, which, having acquired the premises, entrusted its management to the Associazione Familiari dei Tossicodipendenti (association of families of drug addicts) or A.F.T.T..

  •  

    Villa Renata became a facility ready to accommodate addicts aimed at integration into the therapy community and with a programme of about 6 months.

1986

  • Villa Renata was converted into a therapy community for drug addicts for male patients.

  •  

    Villa Renata started a continuous collaboration with the “Centre de Documentations sur le Toxicomanies” (C.N.D.T.), a body of the French Ministry of Health based in Lyon.

    1987

    • Villa Renata became a Therapy Community for patients of both sexes.

    • Villa Renata was one of the founders of Coordinamento Veneto delle Strutture Terapeutiche (Veneto coordination of therapy facilities) or Co.Ve.S.T.), which brings together 26 therapy communities around the Veneto Region. Since its foundation, the manager of Villa Renata has been entrusted with the coordination of the project.

      Villa Renata was one of the founding bodies of the non-governmental organization Istituto di Ricerca sui Fattori di Rischio nell’Infanzia e nell’Adolescenza (institute for research into risk factors in childhood and adolescence) or IREFREA under the aegis of the Council of Europe, affiliated to the University of Lyon 2.

    1988

    • Villa Renata was established as a social cooperative. The partners were the psychologists, doctors, educators, and community workers working there.

    1989

    • The City of Venice granted a facility on Lido island called “IL GLICINE” which increased the availability of accommodation.

    • In the same year, Villa Renata collaborated in organizing the International Conference IREFREA – Veneto Region: “Choices of life, death, and the prevention of self-destructive behaviour among young people”.

    1990

    • Villa Renata started an agreement protocol with the Institute of Legal Medicine of Modena directed by Prof. Francesco del Fazio, for the purpose of integrative training and, again with the same Institute, conducted a national research on “The family relational modality and the genesis of behavioural disorders”.

       

    • The Department of Social Services of the Veneto Region entrusted Villa Renata with the carrying out of a pilot project for research and work on parent-child relationships with the children of drug addicts undergoing treatment. Based on the results, the Veneto Region decided to continue the research mentioned also for 1992.

       

    • With the same resolution, the Veneto Region’s Social Services Councillorship entrusted Villa Renata with running a “Training Course on the prevention of psychopathological disorders among children of subjects dependent on psychotropic substances, and on the methods applied in the parent-child relationship and family system”. The two-year course is intended for 50 Doctors, Psychologists, Social Assistants of state-run dependency-treatment clinics and the therapy communities around the region. The teachers committee is made up of professors from the US, EU and Italian Universities and Research Centres.

    1993

    • Villa Renata was enrolled in the Register of Auxiliary Bodies established by the Veneto Region in accordance with the Consolidated Law on the regulation, prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of drug addiction, approved by Presidential Decree No. 309 of 9 October 1990.

       

    • Villa Renata founded the Social Cooperative “Not only Green”, as an operational tool to promote the social and work integration of young patients who are about to conclude their therapy.

    1994

    • Villa Renata obtained the recognition of a specialized therapy facility, having been classified in the register of C-type therapy communities approved by the Veneto Region, the only one in the Region.

    1995

    • In collaboration with Istituto di Ricovero ed Educazione (I.R.E) (institute of hospitality and education), Venice, Villa Renata launched the Aurora project, a programme to reconcile treatment with research through the observation of mother-child couples, where the mother has a drug addiction problem.

       

    • Villa Renata carried out training internships on behalf of the University of Padua, faculties of psychology and educational sciences, and for some psychotherapy training schools with post-graduate agreements.

      Villa Renata became a member of the European Federation of Therapeutic Communities.

    1996

    Villa Renata was accredited in the register of partner of the European Monitoring Centre of Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA), Lisbon as part of the Drug Demand Reduction.

    1996

    Since January 1996, Villa Renata has been officially on the VIENNA NGO Committee on narcotic drugs at the United Nations Office, Vienna.

    Villa Renata became listed in the Directory of non-governmental organizations working in drug demand reduction of the UNDCP (United Nations International Drug Control Programme) as an accredited body.

    Villa Renata promoted the setting up of IREFREA-Italy (European research institute on risk factors in childhood and adolescence, linked to the European association Institut de Recherche Européen sur le Facteurs de Risque chez l’ Enfant e l’ Adolescent). Among the founding members are operators of the Villa Renata team and Dott. Stocco Paolo was appointed Chairman.

    2005

    Villa Renata, together with the Agenzia Regionale Socio Sanitaria della Regione Veneto (ARSS), has started a process of experimentation in the socio-medical area, which represented a process of institutional accreditation carried out under the supervision of the A.R.S.S.S., successfully concluded with the visit of inspection, verification and evaluation by the Agency in February 2008.

    2008

    In May 2008, the Regional Healthcare Socio-Regional Agency of the Veneto Region issued a favourable opinion in the Region on the requirements and standards reached by Villa Renata in terms of technical quality (appropriateness and effectiveness of the interventions) and in terms of organisational and management quality (efficiency). The therapy community “Villa Renata” for adult drug addicts (male and female) has been accredited as a type C specialist residential service with 35 accredited beds.
